A lot has
happened since the last update.
I've written more of my book and exposed it to the
critical ears of classmates and tutor. The good news
is that the new material has been well
received.
Now that doesn't mean that there haven't been plenty of
suggestions, telling me where and how the new chapters
might be changed for the better - because there
have. But it's generally been agreed that the book
is back on track and that it's pretty good.
There are other aspects of the
class that are worth a mention.
Here's a reminder of the form that the class takes:
each meeting is like a workshop in which a
writer can "pre-publish" part of his/her work
and hear constructive criticism.
On-going work by
class members includes fiction and non-fiction plus the
odd stage play. The general standard is high.
Much of the work is easily good enough to be published,
I'd say. However, actually getting published is
another matter entirely and having a decent book to offer
a publisher isn't enough to guarantee success. I'll
leave that problem for later!
One of our class is already a published
author in a very big way - her best-selling books have been
translated into many languages and also adapted
for television. She recently took the time to read
the entire draft of a classmate's book, then met her after
the class to give detailed comments and advice. Perhaps that
illustrates the very best about this particular class: it
really does nurture and encourage the writer.
